Win!

Quick little note to say congrats to Hope, who was chosen by the glorious Random.org for the extra copy of Hear No Evil by Matthew Paul Turner. And big thanks to everyone who tweeted and commented. If nobody did, this would have been the lamest giveaway ever. :)

Oh, and here's her first album comment:

Haha, it was probably an old Twila Paris one. I don't remember how I old I was, but young enough to think it was the best music ever. Oh my gosh, I can't believe that now :)

I'm pretty sure "God is in Control" was among those first Christian songs I heard. Good times. Random ballet kids FTW.

fangirl moment

Anberlin's Cities came out three years ago today. I remember getting my pre-ordered copy in the mail, taking it into a studio at work, playing it super-loud, and falling in love with the awesomeness of it all. (Note: Working in a place with soundproof rooms and professional grade speakers is nerdy fun.)

Three years later, it still doesn't get old.

So, while we're on the subject of music around here, please permit me a dorky fangirl moment to share my favorite tracks.

"They lied when they said that the good die young."

"You're so brilliant. Grace marked your heart."

"From a lesser known, I'm here and there's hope. There's hope."

"I am the patron saint of lost causes. A fraction of who I once believed." (My favorite Anberlin song ever. I think I listened to it 12 times in one sitting when it first debuted on MySpace.)

"We're not questioning God. Just those He chose to carry on His cross. We're no better you'll see. Just all of us the lost causes..." (Seriously. Does it get any more epic than this?)

Enjoy. And buy the album, dangit. (Or the anthology with the really stupid title, because all three of those discs are worth many repeated listens.)

Is it normal to celebrate the anniversary of something like this? Do you have an album you love enough to remember the day it came out? Lets share and have fan moments. :)

Hear No Evil Blog Tour

Do you remember the first album you ever bought? I do. I remember the anticipation, 12-year-old me eagerly going to the music store's CD rack, picking up the shiny black jewel case, and handing over my birthday money for... R.I.O.T. By Carman.

Yeah. I wish I could say in 1995 I was listening to The Bends or Jagged Little Pill (now classic albums I didn't discover until last year, actually). But no, my memory is forever going to be Carman of the black leather, that rebellious, Jesus-loving Italian dude with cheesy music videos and "take-back-America-for-Christ" messages that were subtle like a roundhouse kick to the head. But hey, this was my world of an evangelical kid looking for music I could believe in. And that's part of the reason I really can appreciate Matthew Paul Turner's new book Hear No Evil. Because he gets it and laughs with you... not at you.

Hear No Evil is a collection of honest, funny stories with music as its backdrop. Matthew grew up in an ultra-conservative Baptist church where famous preachers signed your Bible and being a Sandi Patty fan was a dirty little secret. The stories follow his life with music, from feeling called to be a Christian Michael Jackson at a Sea World otter show and adjusting to life at Belmont College, to working for CCM Magazine and learning to reconcile faith and love for R.E.M. and Joan Osborne. It's a quick-paced, lighthearted book that makes you laugh and think, and -- for me, anyway -- reads like a mirror of recognition.

What I love most about MPT's writing is that he can be edgy and sarcastic, but not without affection for his fellow Christians. Of course he's going to pick on the church of his youth, but there are plenty of other eccentric characters along the way: Belmont's artsy Calvinists, "famous in West Virginia" Southern gospel brothers, and wannabe Christian rock stars (in one funny exchange, noting that a identifying a "Christian rocker" could be the Holy Spirit, but is probably "more like gaydar.")

Together, the stories tell a greater story of grace and growth, with moments of poignant reflection. In fact, the best story in the book is the chapter "Chasing Amy," where he recalls interviewing Amy Grant for a CCM cover story that almost didn't happen... and casts a revealing look at the places where faith, fame, and forgiveness collide with heartbreaking compassion and some of his best writing yet.

This is a quick read with plenty of laughs and sometimes touching, sometimes crazy stories. It's a conversational memoir, so don't expect deep theology or life lessons of it, but simply the story of one man's ongoing faith journey and his soundtrack along the way. Read, laugh with recognition, and if you were an evangelical child of the 90's, enjoy a little dose of nostalgia. It doesn't profess to have answers, but in the bittersweet, last chapter, there is "just me and a song and hope." And sometimes, that's enough, right?

DISlike

Apparently, Facebook has slapped a great big DISlike on my relationship status.

With Valentine's Day come the online dating ads, urging me to harness the power of the Internets to help get me a happy little relationship status update for my stalker feed. And lo and behold, they were awesome. So awesome, I screencapped them to share their awesomeness on Twitter. In honor of Singles Awareness Day, here they are, archived forever for your amusement and mine.
Why yes, this man looks like a true pillar of spirituality! I'll bet he's prayed a whole lot more than once and would be an amazing patriarch/home school dad! Either that, or he's a yoga instructor stock photo. Sadly, if it's too good to be true, it probably is, and I'm not even convinced Christian Yoga Dude is real. Oh well. Next!

Now this is more like it. Apparently, BraniacDating.com will save me time and effort by weeding out the dumb people. I'll bet there are even plenty of smart, lonely geeks here just waiting to discover a video game playing, Lord of the Rings loving soulmate. (come to think of it, that sounds about right for me.)

With sites like these, I have no excuse to be single, right? If only there were a combination of the two... call it Nerds for Jesus or something.

Happy Valentine's Day! For reals. <3

Best. Commercial. Ever.

It's probably old, but I just saw it today. And it was pretty moving and deep and worth sharing.

I dedicate this little Spike Jonze video to anyone else out there that likes to name inanimate objects or imagine personalities for their paper shredders and stuff.

Grab a tissue. And be sure to watch til the end.

Blog Touring = woot!

A thought: if Matthew Paul Turner and Sarah Cunningham went on tour together, would it be the Evil Dandelions Tour? Because that's what I was tempted to call this post. Thankfully for them, they are two separate writers, with separate books, on separate blog tours. And even if they did tour together, they wouldn't have me naming it with title mashups... though Evil Dandelions is fun to say and kind of sounds like a band name... right?

Umm, right. Anyway. A preview of two wonderful tours coming to my little corner of the Internets in the next couple months:

First up is the Hear No Evil Blog Tour, coming to Div Sense on Feb 17th! I'm loving Matthew Paul Turner's newest book about "innocence, music, and the Holy Ghost," a funny new spiritual memoir according to "life's soundtrack." As one of those evangelical kids who grew up with Christian music, I can so relate, and I can't wait to share my review-ish thoughts with you. (Rumor has it I might have a copy to pass along too. Free book. Tell your friends.) The book will be in stores Feb 16th, but in the meantime, if you aren't reading Matthew's blog Jesus Needs New PR... go. do it. now. If the words "Paces" and "Saxon Math" conjure up scary memories, you'll love yesterday's post. (Pre-order Hear No Evil here)

Next is the lovely Sarah Cunningham's Picking Dandelions Blog Tour on March 24th. I've mentioned Sarah a couple times here already, and I'm really excited to help spread the word about her new book that released today! (Looks like I'm in good company for this tour too...) If you enjoy spiritual memoirs with a good dose of humor a la Anne Lamott or Elizabeth Gilbert, then you should definitely check this one out. Expect a review, and perhaps even an interview come March 24th... and if you can't wait, I'm sure she wouldn't mind if you went ahead and ordered her book from Amazon since it released today and stuff. :) You can find more info, excerpts, and of course her blog on her website, sarahcunningham.org

I'm happy and honored to be a part of two great tours so close together. I'm also slightly stressed, because now I kinda feel like I should clean up my blog and make a good impression. Post interesting stuff... dust the furniture and all that, y'know? Ah well.

But for now... reading away, and working on my next review for JFH. (Fireflight - For Those Who Wait. Lake County rock n' roll FTW.) That's enough to keep me busy.

Speaking of, the JFH Staff's picks for Most Anticipated New Music of 2010 is up, if you want to see what we're all giddy about in Christian music this year.

Annnnd.... I watched the Grammys for the first time last night. But that.... ah, that deserves an entire post in itself. :)
